From Frank:

"Hi Carl,Where would I find recent building costs for Hawaii?

Frank"

Hi Frank,

You can find recent building costs for Hawaii and all the other states on http://www.byoh.com/.

Click on "Getting started" and scroll down to # 5, to determine building costs using the "cost to build calculator.

I did a cost to build for this house plan from Better Homes & gardens for a non-metropolitan area in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The Savoy House Plan Plan Number: BHG-NFA-1469

Stories: 1Total Living Area: 2094 s.f.First Floor: 2094 s.f.Bedrooms: 4Full Baths: 2, Half Baths: 1

Slab Foundation
I came up with a cost of $250,156.00, excluding land, a General Contractor's profit & overhead, permits, insurance, and equipment rental.
That is a cost of $119.46 per sq. ft.
These numbers are from the "cost to build calculator" and are from the National Building Cost Manual, published by Craftsman Book Company.
Single-family homes vary widely in quality, and quality of construction is a major cost variable. I used #5 "class quality as you can always upgrade based on your budget.
These numbers are to be used for preliminary estimating only.
Until you actually get your own bids and estimates and complete your own cost estimate spreadsheet, you should not make a final "build, not build" decision.
Well Frank, I hope this helps.
Glad to be of service,
Carl
